Snow Software Asset Management After Flexera: Your Options in 2026

If your software asset management still runs on Snow License Manager 9, it has had no patches since 31 March 2026. That is the date Flexera, which now owns Snow Software, stopped supporting version 9 and the inventory server behind it. Your next Snow renewal is now a Flexera conversation, and it is the right moment to decide what you actually need from a SAM tool, not just which upgrade to sign.

This guide sets out what changed, the options Flexera offers, and the questions we would ask before choosing one.

In short

  • Flexera completed its acquisition of Snow Software on 15 February 2024 and said it would keep supporting both product lines (Flexera press release).
  • Snow License Manager 9.x and earlier, and Snow Inventory Server 6.x and earlier, reached end of life on 31 December 2025 and end of support on 31 March 2026 (Flexera announcement, 1 July 2025).
  • Flexera offers two paths: upgrade to a current Snow License Manager release (the documentation now covers version 26), or move to Snow Atlas, its software-as-a-service platform.
  • Snow Software is on Oracle’s list of verified tool vendors, but verification covers named Oracle products and the right tool version only.

What Flexera has said, in its own words

When the deal closed, Flexera’s press release said it “will continue to innovate, enhance, maintain, and support both Flexera and Snow solutions.” Seventeen months later, its announcement on Snow’s older versions was blunt: after 31 March 2026, “Flexera will no longer provide technical support, updates, or patches for these versions.” It named two ways forward: “Upgrading to a newer version of Snow License Manager and Snow Inventory Server, or Migrating to Snow Atlas, our SaaS-based platform.”

So Snow is not being switched off. The old on-premises versions are, and every Snow customer is being moved onto a newer release or onto Flexera’s cloud.

Your three options

Upgrade Snow License Manager where it runs today

The simplest path. Your data, agents and reports stay where they are, and you return to a supported version. It suits companies whose SAM process works and whose only problem is the version number. Budget for the upgrade project itself: a new server build, connector checks and a period of running old and new side by side.

Move to Snow Atlas

Flexera’s preferred direction. You stop running the SAM servers yourself, and you gain SaaS management in the same platform. The questions to settle first are about data: where it will be hosted, what leaves your network, and whether your security team and any regulator are content with that. For banks and government bodies in India and the Gulf, that answer is not automatic.

Go back to market

A forced migration is the cheapest moment to compare. You are paying for a project either way, so compare the cost of the Snow upgrade against other tools and against a managed service. Our SAM tools comparison sets out ten tools side by side. If the real gap is people rather than software, a managed SAM service runs the tool and the process for you; ours runs on Rythium’s own Euladox platform.

What stays the same whichever you choose

The tool is half of software asset management. The other half is the record of what you are entitled to: contracts, order documents, licence keys and the rules attached to each. No migration moves that for you. A tool can tell you that Oracle Database is installed on 40 servers. Only your contracts can tell you whether that is compliant, and that comparison is your effective license position.

Oracle is where this matters most. Oracle’s License Management Services lists tool vendors it has verified to collect accurate usage data for Oracle Database and its options, Fusion Middleware, Java SE or E-Business Suite. Both Flexera and Snow Software are on the list. If you rely on the tool’s Oracle data in a review, confirm that your exact product and tool version are covered. Our page on Oracle’s audit scripts explains what Oracle collects when it uses its own tools instead.

Mistakes we see in SAM tool migrations

  • Migrating inventory without entitlements. The new tool fills up with installations, and nobody loads the contracts. The reports look complete and answer nothing.
  • Losing usage history. Two years of usage data is evidence in a negotiation or an audit. Export it before the old servers go.
  • Assuming Oracle coverage carries over. Oracle verifies specific tools and versions for specific products. A new version needs checking.
  • Letting the renewal date choose. If the Snow renewal falls before your evaluation ends, negotiate a short extension rather than signing for three years under pressure.
  • Dropping agents during the cutover. Compare device counts before and after. Gaps in coverage show up later as licences nobody can account for.

Questions we are asked about Snow Software

Is Snow Software still supported?

Yes, on current versions. Flexera supports current releases of Snow License Manager (its documentation covers version 26) and Snow Atlas. Snow License Manager 9.x and earlier, and Snow Inventory Server 6.x and earlier, have been out of support since 31 March 2026.

Who owns Snow Software now?

Flexera. It completed the acquisition on 15 February 2024.

Is Snow Software the same as ServiceNow?

No. Snow Software was a Swedish SAM company and is now part of Flexera. ServiceNow is a separate company that sells its own software asset management module.

Do we need a new licence key to upgrade Snow License Manager?

Not for the move to version 25, according to Flexera’s announcement. Check the release notes for the version you install.

Can Snow data be used in an Oracle audit?

It can, for the Oracle products Oracle has verified it for, using a verified version of the tool. Check both before you rely on it, and read what the data says before Oracle does.
