Business Case for SAM

The audit practices of software publishers makes it imminent for end-users to continually be aware of their license compliance status.  Not being aware could potentially lead to

  • Legal Risks
  • Excessive & Penal Financial Exposures
  • Reputation Risk
  • Business Continuity Risk
  • Cyber Security & Unsanctioned Application Use Risk
  • Non-optimal utilization of costly software assets

It is thus imperative for every organisation to have SAM processes embedded in their IT DNA.

Key Benefits of Rythium Euladox Software Asset Management

Discovery

Discovery Satellite conducts Agentless discovery of all the assets in your enterprise network. The scan automatically provides visibility of all assets including software deployed information.

Euladox Discovery Satellite has the following key attributes that are crucial in building a good asset inventory database:

Key Attribute Details
Native Deployment Euladox does not depend on any 3rd party scanning software for collection of network inventory data.
Multi-protocol Discovery Euladox scans and discovers all networked devices – computers, network printers, routers, switches, etc.
Multi-segment & Location Discovery The discovery satellite works both in online and offline modes allowing discovery of every potential combination of network architectures.
Native Adaptors Active Directory, VMware, Hyper V, Xen Server, OVM, Oracle Technology Products, IBM MQ, DB2, MS SQL Server.
Real Time Reporting Discovery completed and error reports for monitoring and troubleshooting.
Troubleshooting Tools for troubleshooting access issues

Software Normalisation

Software Inventory Normalisation is the process of transforming the data (of software installed & used) obtained by Rythium’s Discovery into standardized, consistent & actionable information useful for software asset management.

The process of Software Inventory Normalisation involves:

  • Out of the box Software Recognition: Rythium Euladox has an extensive software catalog that allows recognition of any signature or file evidences of installed software.
  • Software Signature Recognition Service: For those software not recognised out of the box, Rythium analyses the unmatched signatures and completes recognition as part of the standard support services.
  • Categorization and Grouping of Software Inventory Data: In Software Asset Management, publisher specific licensing models are crucial to understanding license deployment and compliance. Rythium has inbuilt algorithms to classify installed software into Suites, Product Sales Bundles, Volume Licensing Rights, Upgrade & Downgrade Enabled Rights, Pre-requisite software dependencies etc.
  • Categorization of software based on commercial terms: Rythium’s Software Asset Management system recognizes commercial, open-source, and free software.
  • Normalization for datacenter software is critical for large infrastructure software vendors. Rythium has specific adaptors for
    • Oracle: Database, Options, Management Packs, Weblogic, Fusion Middleware, EBS
    • VMware: vSphere, vCenter, ESXi
    • Xen Server
    • Microsoft: Windows Server, SQL Server
    • RedHat Enterprise Linux
    • IBM LPAR

100% Vendor Coverage

Rythium discovery and software inventory normalization covers every software installed & used in a machine. While most get recognized out-of-the-box, the remaining are recognized by analyzing installation signatures & file evidences as part of our standard support services.

Specialized Adaptors

Rythium has specific adaptors for

    • Oracle: Database, Options, Management Packs, Weblogic, Fusion Middleware, EBS
    • VMware: vSphere, vCenter, ESXi
    • Xen Server
    • Microsoft: Windows Server, SQL Server
    • RedHat Enterprise Linux
    • IBM LPAR

Datacenter Software Compliance

There are two aspects to Datacenter Software Compliance:

  1. Hardware Deployment Architecture
  2. Software Discovery and Normalization Processes

Hardware Deployment Architecture

The key to understanding datacenter license lies in the ability to discover and normalize all the servers & virtualization technologies used. Rythium has an in-built server catalog containing servers manufactured since 2002 by companies like IBM/Lenovo, HP, Dell, Cisco, Sun/Oracle, Fujitsu, Nutanix. Processors from Intel, AMD, IBM, Sun/Oracle, HP are also mapped in its entirety.

Software Discovery and Normalization Processes

Rythium has specialized adaptors for:

  • Datacenter Softwares Discovery: Oracle Database, Oracle Weblogic & Other middleware, Oracle EBS, IBM AIX & LPAR, VMware, Windows Server, Hyper-V, SQL Server, Xen Server, KVM, OVM, Acropolis, RHEL, CentOS, Fedora, Ubuntu, OEL, Suse, HPUX, Solaris
  • License Normalization Algorithms: Oracle technology products, Oracle EBS, Windows Server, SQL Server, VMware, RHEL, Citrix Xen Server, OEL

Contract Management

Many companies have contract management systems but these tools do not focus on managing software license contracts.

Rythium’s Contract Management module is a central element in the Software Asset Management process with the following key attributes:

  • Tracking the final outcome of a software or IT contract
  • Tracking key dates with alerts and notifications
  • Tracking license terms and application of terms to license compliance analysis
  • Contract hierarchy definitions
  • Financial information for IT assets
  • Centralized repository for all paper and digital agreements and contracts.

Purchase Orders

Rythium’s Software Asset Management tool has definitions for different types of procurement instruments that allows accrual of entitlement information:

  • Master Licensing Agreements
  • Addendums and Schedules
  • Ordering Documents & Order Forms
  • Purchase Orders
  • Maintenance agreements
  • Software Assurance and Support agreements

Entitlement

Rythium’s License entitlement management has two synergistic aspects coming together:

  • Software Catalog Definitions
    • Definition of licensable SKUs (a combination of Product, Version & Edition)
    • Definitions of software suites
    • Definitions of sales packs and bundles
    • Commercial, free and open-source software
    • Upgrades and downgrade
    • Cross Edition Migration

2. Entitlement Proofs

    • Software Contracts
    • Purchase Orders
    • Ordering Documents
    • Payment confirmations

Effective License Positions

The term Effective License Position (ELP) originated from the Microsoft SAM practice. It has become a de-facto standard for most software asset management reporting methodologies.

The ELP is a report that compares the deployed software with the procured licenses or entitlements.

Vendor Specific Reports

While the ELP is an industry-standard for compliance reporting, some of the larger software vendors have their own set of reports to understand deployment, usage, and compliance. Rythium Software Asset Management tries to mimic the needs of different software publishers and provide specially designed reports, views and analytical dashboards.

Currently, Rythium’s Software Asset Management tool has vendor specific reports for:

  • VMware
  • Oracle
  • Redhat

Software Metering

Software metering is collecting statistics about application usage in managed machines. The data collection is continuous or at scheduled polling intervals.

Rythium’s Software Asset Management provides two metering functionalities:

  1. Software Usage by host
This is done through the agentless scan. It provides information on how many times an executable file (exe) has been run on a specific computer. The last time a particular exe was invoked is also provided in the report.
  2. Continuous Metering Data
This is done when you use Rythium’s Discovery Agent. The agent has to be installed on every monitored computer and the data collection is either continuous or at specified polling intervals.
